Today is January 24, designated by UNESCO as the International Day of Education, and the theme of this year’s celebration is: “to invest in people, prioritize education.” The United Nations General Assembly declared an International Day of Education five years ago to celebrate the role of education in building opportunities for peace and development.

Educators have long known that strengthening relationships with their students’ families is an essential tool in fostering classroom success. In Organizing Schools for Improvement: Lessons from Chicago, the Consortium on Chicago School Research found that elementary schools with strong connections with families were ten times more likely to improve in math and four times more likely to improve in reading than schools that did not have strong connections.
Beginning in January and continuing throughout February, classrooms across the U.S. will recognize Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the lasting impact that he and other Civil Rights leaders have made towards equality, justice, and the advancement of our nation.
