Space Jam: A New Legacy is inspiring unique learning opportunities for students of all ages! Basketball and coding have more in common than you might think; they both require practice, creativity, and coaching. That’s why we’ve teamed up to bring educators and students learning materials inspired by the film. Research shows learners are more likely to retain and explore based on culturally relevant areas of passion, and our lessons guide learners through authentically solving real problems.1

Learn to code at your own pace with Space Jam: A New Legacy on Microsoft Learn

For the more advanced learner, we have launched a new learning path on Microsoft Learn that will guide students through writing Python and JavaScript using Visual Studio Code and Azure.

The learning path uses machine learning to coach Tune Squad basketball players, inspired by Space Jam: A New Legacy, and teaches basic data science principles and machine learning through the lens of optimizing the chances for the Tune Squad to win their basketball game. Also, Dr. Sarah Guthals, Ph.D. in computer science education, is launching a short series of video tutorials guiding learners through the learning path.

Taking inspiration from real NBA and WNBA players, students will learn how to use data to predict the efficiency of individual players throughout a game and create a web application that coaches can use to ensure tired players get water breaks and well-rested players get on the court! You can read more about them on Microsoft Tech Community.

Space Jam a new legacy

In this 90-minute online workshop, titled “Space Jam: A New Legacy coding workshop,” students ages eight and older will have the opportunity to build a playable prototype of a videogame with block-based coding on the MakeCode Arcade platform while learning about the professional skills and STEAM careers that are involved in game design. Parents and students can sign up for the Space Jam: A New Legacy coding workshop online and find additional resources and other free workshops that teach new skills and keep kids entertained this holiday season on the virtual student workshop page. We’ve also created an educator version of these trainings that makes it easier for teachers to incorporate STEAM lessons in their curricula in the hope of amplifying opportunities for learning. Educators can download Microsoft Store Space Jam: A New Legacy curriculum for some exciting Space Jam: A New Legacy coding fun with students today.

About Space Jam: A New Legacy

Welcome to the Jam! Basketball champion and global icon LeBron James goes on an epic adventure alongside timeless Tune Bugs Bunny in the animated/live-action event Space Jam: A New Legacy, from director Malcolm D. Lee and an innovative filmmaking team including Ryan Coogler and Maverick Carter. This transformational journey is a manic mashup of two worlds that reveals just how far some parents will go to connect with their kids. When LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue AI, LeBron must get them home safely by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny, and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the AI’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before. It’s Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron’s bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even “King” James by playing the game their own way.

With an added flare of the Tune Squad, these STEAM learning materials are sure to keep students engaged. Check them out today and don’t miss the film coming 2021!
